It was 40 years ago today that the Beatles completed work on their last official release as a band,”Abbey Road.” When released a month later, the album was an instant classic and still is, with two sides worth (or one disc) of great songs. Did the band knew this would be their last recordings together? Sure, which is why they wanted to go out in style. Although the famed Side 2 medley might be just a patchwork collection of unfinished brilliant songs, they work as a stream of pop consciousness, psychically tracing the band’s ascension and eventual dissolution. There’s only one band in music history that’s earned the right to finish off their musical career with a song actually titled “The End” and that’s The Beatles:
