Friday Song: Beulah

I first heard this San Francisco band sitting on my usual perch at the late lamented Mojo’s Daily Grind in Austin, Texas. The baristas had good taste and I discovered the sounds of Belle & Sebastian and others in the cool of the sleazy summer heat of 1999 with their second — and best IMHO — release “When Your Heartstrings Break.” I was instantly attracted to Beulah’s lo-fi punk Beach Boys vibe and their good melodic sense. Plus I’m a sucker for horns, which blow aplenty on this wistful traveling song, “Emma Blowgun’s Last Stand.” I have no idea what that means but I miss Beulah, who broke up in 2004. As they sing here with full pop certainty for all of us, “Goodness knows it’s been a wonderful run…”
