Favorite Scene Theatre: They Live (1988)

As Mr. Peel thoughtfully reminded me OBEY, John Carpenter’s ode to Reagan Country CONSUME was released this day in 1988. A brilliant premise hampered by a low budget and weak climax, THEY LIVE is nonetheless one of the few American films of the 80’s to identify the rot under the Nike swoosh NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. Roddy Roddy Piper turns in a terrific understated performance; his revolutionary awakening WATCH TV is handled quite well, particularly in my favorite moment when he puts on his sunglasses (80’s irony!) and finally unveils the awful truth. The film seems more relevant today than ever before…THIS IS YOUR GOD. Ow, my head hurts.
