Jean Giraud aka Moebius RIP

One of the great artists in the film, illustrative, comic medium has passed onto another veil. I knew him as “Moebius” in the pages of “Heavy Metal” the National Lampoon-backed American spin-off of France’s “Metal Hurlant” — his elegant, fanciful, beautiful etched drawings were a balm betwixt the crushed skulls and heaving bosoms of the magazine. I learned a lot about art by copying his style for my own notebook comics, and of course, he was one of the designers on ALIEN (1979). And how many comic illustrators get praise from Federico Fellini? I didn’t keep up with his work in my later years, but his identifiable style and vision remains embedded in my artistic consciousness. Au revoir, Moebius.
