Friday Song: The Beach Boys

I’ve had a love affair with the Beach Boy’s legendary ill-fated 1966 SMILE since reading about it in the epic and exhaustive tome by Dominic Priore, the world’s expert on the subject. Fortunately, cosmic justice does occur and SMILE was too good to be contained by a group of cultists so Brian Wilson and lyricist Van Dyke Parks put together a proper version in 2004 to great acclaim. Better still, after decades of bootleg versions, Capital released the original tracks in a proper epic and exhaustive set. Had SMILE been issued in 1966, The Beach Boys would certainly have garnered the same praise reserved for Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. One of my favorite tracks is this jaunty optimistic instrumental called “Look (Song For Children)” that has a “Good Vibrations” esque keyboard with a carnival atmosphere. A great song to start off an endless summer weekend…
