The World’s End…is here

Thanks to Midnites For Maniacs, I had the pleasure of sitting through SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ and THE WORLD’S END capped by Q&A with The Boyyyz, Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost earlier this month in SF. It was a blast to watch the films with a loud appreciative crowd and that the filmmakers are heartfelt geeks themselves is ice cream on the Cornetto. THE WORLD’S END continues to show them expanding their insight to middle-age, a sobering time for those 90’s youth promised a Champagne Super Nova but never delivered. Simon Pegg turns in his best film performance as the elder slacker trying to recapture their unfinished pub crawl in the face of certain genre elements; and when they make a Nick Frost teddy man-bear, I’m buying one. Frost is like Sammo Hung here, playing against type along with a coterie of other excellent actors I’m far too lazy to name right now. Wright, Pegg and Frost continue their unique ability to mix larfs, thrills and pathos as THE WORLD’S END goes to some startling places, including a well-timed jab at the “Starbucking” of our culture. Find out for yourself and check back in. Suffice to say, I would not be surprised to see a non-genre film in their future as the script has a lot to say about the dreams of youth becoming the regrets of today. And I’ve never wanted a drink more after a film — even though Pegg proudly announced to great applause that he was three years sober to that evening…Cheers!
